50 Für Bad Berlin

For Berlin Art Week, the non-profit organisation Flussbad Berlin will be presenting the exhibition and auction "50 Für Bad Berlin" in the Red Salon of the Bauakademie. Fluss Bad Berlin is a civil society initiative for urban development committed to making swimming possible in the Spree Canal and, in the long run, in other sections of the Berlin Spree.
"50 Für Bad Berlin" will show works by artists and architects who support the reconquest of the river as a natural resource for the city and its inhabitants. They advocate a sustainable development of Berlin for the common good.
They oppose the tendency to restrict for ideological reasons the debate on the future of the city (center) to the historicising reconstruction of the Berlin of the early 20th century and the attempt to appropriate "art and culture” for that purpose. They want to emphasise instead that art and culture are closely linked to development initiatives such as Fluss Bad Berlin, which promote a more social, ecological, sustainable, and future-proof urban development.
The works donated by you for this purpose, which can be found on this website or in the auction catalogue, can be purchased at auction during the exhibition.

The actress, film director and screenwriter Nicolette Krebitz has taken on the patronage of the 50 Für Bad Berlin project. Nicolette Krebitz lives in Berlin, she likes to visit the "Fluss Bad Garten" on walks, and she enjoys spending time in and on the water. She is a member of our non-profit organisation because she is committed to the sustainable development of Berlin for the common good.

"A few years ago, I went for a walk with a friend on Museum Island in the evening and saw the exhibition at the Bad Berlin river lock. It was shortly after or during corona and the vision for the future of this organisation immediately gave me so much good energy and actually gave me the idea for the first time that I could help shape my home city of Berlin. So it doesn't always have to be the case that you suddenly stand in front of the results of the urban planners and can't believe what our city is becoming. There are also good ideas, a positive outlook for urban life in Berlin. Ideas that think about everyone and not just a certain group. Ideas that make life better for everyone - letting air into the increasingly crowded and hot city centre.
Many major cities around the world are already working on this, or have even got as far as making rivers usable. And not just for shipping traffic and tourists, but for the people who live and work in the cities. For me, this is what the Fluss Bad Berlin stands for. And that's what I stand for, right alongside them."

The exhibition "50 Für Bad Berlin" presents works by mostly Berlin-based artists and architects who show solidarity with the objectives of the Fluss Bad Berlin project and the team behind it. The artists and architects involved in the exhibition include Rosa Barba, Olafur Eliasson, Elmgreen Dragset, Simon Fujiwara, Esra Gülmen, Thomas Demand, Katharina Grosse, Regula Lüscher, Jürgen Mayer H, Olaf Nicolai, Raumlabor, Shirin Sabahi, Michael Sailstorfer, Karin Sander, Sauerbruch Hutton, Wolfgang Tillmans, Haegue Yang and Tobias Zielony among many others.

While the works on display cover a wide range of types and techniques, they all relate to themes the Fluss Bad project addresses: for instance, in their interpretation of the essential significance of water for our world and for life, and the diverse relationships between humans and the element. They analyse the sensory, political and technical significance of water as a cultural asset, and the meaning of a free and equal access to it. They remind us that the river belongs to the city, that everyday culture belongs to high culture, and that the city is shaped by social values, which –at the same time– it is capable to mediate.

Proceeds
The proceeds of the auction will be used by the non-profit organisation for the further development and permanent operation of a system for forecasting the current water quality in the Spree Canal (www.badberlin.info) and, in future, other areas of the inner-city Spree. The aim is for Berliners to be able to find out about the current water quality at any time via an app. This qualified information will be the central basis for the reappropriation of water as a common good for the people of Berlin.
