Über das Werk: Rockaway Call for ideas, March 2013 – Initiated by MoMA PS1 and MoMA’s Department of Architecture and Design Our entry for the Rockaway call for ideas competition proposed not only to repair these communities from the damage that has been done and to protect them from future destruction but also to offer something new – social and event spaces that are made from protective infrastructure. The retaining berms, made of infra-light concrete by using for example plastic waste from the beach and ocean, are multi-tasking systems: over time the berms will be integrated into the beach as they are partially covered in sand, by vegetation and trees. Boardwalks and bridges zigzagging across the crowns of the berms will connect meadows, orchards, sport fields, swimming pools, and pavilions and shops. It’s an open-ended system: The communities that they protect will determine different ways how to use them based on need and interest. Its flexible and what we are showing is not set in stone but is a kind of demonstration of how this might work. Like the Flussbad project our project can be phased over time, as needed and by priority: this is a democratic process and will be determined by the communities.

1993 haben Frank Barkow und Regine Leibinger ihr amerikanischdeutsches Büro in Berlin gegründet. Es beschäftigt heute rund 90 Mitarbeiter. In den vergangenen Jahren entstanden zahlreiche Projekte im In- und Ausland, deren Qualität durch Veröffentlichungen und Preise verbürgt ist. Die Bandbreite der Leistungen von Barkow Leibinger umfasst öff entliche Bauten, Bürogebäude sowie Innenausbauten für Wohnen und Gewerbe im Bestand. Zum inhaltlichen Schwerpunkt – dem Bauen für mittelständische und große Unternehmen – gehören neben der Aufstellung langfristiger Masterpläne zur Standortentwicklung vor allem die Planung und Realisierung repräsentativer und funktionaler Bauten für Produktion, Logistik und Verwaltung wie zum Beispiel das Betriebsrestaurant der Firma Trumpf in Ditzingen. In den letzten Jahren wurden u.a. der „Tour Total“, die Deutschlandzentrale des französischen Mineralölkonzerns nahe des Berliner Hauptbahnhofs, der Fellows Pavilion für die American Academy in Berlin, die TRUMPF Smart Factory in Chicago und das Harvard ArtLab in Cambridge fertiggestellt. Zuletzt eröffneten das Sid Richardson und das Hanszen Residential College der Rice University in Houston und das B:HUB in Berlin.
